From Legacy Hosting to AWS

CostOS, a construction estimating software, needed to modernize its platform to improve performance, scalability, and reliability. With our help, they migrated from a restrictive data center to Amazon Web Services (AWS) — cutting costs by 25%, reducing latency, and delivering a seamless user experience without downtime.

The Customer

As a family-owned business in Memphis, Tenn., CostOS’s enterprise-level software enables construction and engineering companies to create accurate project estimates, win competitive bids, and manage large-scale projects with confidence. Their customer base includes leading construction firms and government organizations.

The Challenge

CostOS relied on a legacy, web-based platform hosted in a restrictive data center environment that caused significant challenges, including:

  • Limited control over infrastructure: The hosting provider tightly oversaw access, leaving CostOS unable to troubleshoot or resolve recurring technical issues.

  • Frequent user disruptions: End users experienced latency, failed sign-ins, and frozen demo environments, causing headaches for employees as customer frustration grew.

  • Lost productivity: Internal teams spent valuable time mediating between the data center and irritated customers.

The antiquated, unreliable, and costly system put both customer satisfaction and business growth at risk.

Why JetSweep?

CostOS initially approached AWS to explore AppStream as a potential solution to their antiquated system. AWS referred them to us because of our AWS End User Computing Competency, which is a distinction awarded to partners with deep expertise in AWS Workspaces and AppStream. The CostOS team had direct access to our engineers and leadership team throughout the engagement.

The Solution

Through the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), CostOS was able to achieve a structured, cost-effective transition to the AWS environment. The project began with a detailed migration assessment, which analyzed customer usage patterns and produced “t-shirt-sized” — small, medium, large, and extra-large — pricing models that allowed CostOS to clearly see how the move would impact costs, productivity, and user experience.

From there, a proof of concept was completed with one of CostOS’s long-standing customers to validate the AWS AppStream solution in real-world conditions. The results showed faster performance and significant cost savings, giving the CostOS team confidence to move forward. The AppStream environment was built out while CostOS brought in their code. This enabled a seamless cutover from their legacy data center with zero downtime. To minimize disruption, customers were gradually migrated as existing contracts with the data center expired.

The Benefits

The AWS migration transformed CostOS’s business. Key outcomes include:

  • 25% cost savings compared to their legacy data center

  • Faster sign-ins and reduced latency, improving user satisfaction and enhancing demo performance

  • Zero downtime during migration

  • Improved scalability and compliance, as AWS security features and FIPS 140-2 readiness positioned CostOS to engage with government agencies and large enterprise clients

  • Greater visibility into usage with AWS resource tagging, enabling more accurate billing and margin management

CostOS is now positioned for long-term growth and better able to serve existing customers, while expanding into new, highly regulated markets.
