JetSweep Offers AWS DB Migration Service

There are several factors that must be considered when embarking on a database migration to Amazon’s cloud. The JetSweep team of Amazon experienced, and certified database consultants will help to guide you through the process. We have identified the most important steps in this process. As an AWS Advanced Solutions Partner, JetSweep will assist to understand viable options, the benefits of each, and to make decision about which platform best suits your needs. We’ve identified 5 phases for a typical migration process:

Phase 1: Migration Preparation and Business Planning

Determine the right objectives and begin to get an idea of the types of benefits you will see. It starts with some foundational experience and developing a preliminary business case for a migration. This requires taking your objectives into account, along with the age and architecture of your existing applications, and their constraints

Phase 2: Portfolio Discovery and Planning

Understand your IT portfolio, the dependencies between applications, and begin to consider what types of migration strategies you will need to employ to meet your business case objectives. With the portfolio discovery and migration approach, you are in a good position to build a full business case;

Phase 3 & Phase 4: Designing, Migrating, and Validating Application

Focus moves from the portfolio level to the individual application level and you design, migrate, and validate each application. Each application is designed, migrated, and validated according to one of the six common strategies (“The 6 R’s”). Once you have some foundational experience from migrating a few databases and a plan in place the organization can get behind – it’s time to accelerate the migration and achieve scale

Phase 5: Operate

As applications are migrated, you iterate on your new foundation, turn off old systems, and constantly iterate toward a modern operating model. Your operating model becomes an evergreen set of people, process, and technology that constantly improves as you migrate more applications

JetSweep Database Migration Services Overview – 6 Common Migration Strategies

  1. Rehost (“lift and shift”) Databases and apps are more easily managed or re-architected once migrated to the cloud
  2. Re-platform (“lift, tinker and shift”) Looking to migrate to a fully-managed RDBMS service such as Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)?
  3. Repurchase (“drop and shop”) Organizations wishing to change their database licensing model
  4. Refactor / Re-architect Typically driven by strong business need to add features, scale or improve performance, move to SOA
  5. Retire Evaluating retired database assets no longer useful and can be turned off
  6. Retain Strategy to simply retain databases not ready to migrate

Homogeneous vs Heterogenous Database Migrations

  • Homogeneous database migrations Since the schema structure, data types, and database code are compatible between the source and target databases, this kind of migration is a 1-step process
  • Heterogenous Database Migrations schema structure, data types, and database code of source and target databases can be quite different, requiring a schema and code transformation before the data migration starts, making a 2-step process. The AWS Schema Conversion Tool to convert the source schema and code to match that of the target database, and then use the AWS Database Migration Service to migrate data from the source database to the target database.

Other Common Use Cases

  • Development & Testing Environments the AWS Migration Service can be used to migrate data both into and out of the cloud for development purposes
  • Database Consolidation Move multiple source databases into a single target database for both homogeneous and heterogenous migrations
  • Continuous Data Replication has a multitude of use cases including Disaster Recovery, Geo database distribution, DEV / TEST synchronization. Data can be replicated from a single database to one or more target databases or data from multiple source databases can be consolidated and replicated to one or more target databases
